Reduce the stress of your home move

04 Apr 2016 Reduce the stress of your home move

It’s generally accepted that moving home is a stressful time, and there are all sorts of reasons why this can be. It involves making and breaking very personal attachments with property, they can be very time consuming and – of course – significant financial expenditure is involved. There is also the fear of the unknown, with a lot being beyond the vendor’s control.

According to a new study by estate agent eMoov.co.uk, the biggest fear factor involved in a home move is not getting the price wanted or needed for the home that is being sold. Just over half of people surveyed chose this as their number one answer. This is understandable, as it is the largest factor involving where the seller can move next.

Second (46%) was the stress of the move, followed by not being able to sell in the time needed (43%). Fourth was paying too much in estate agent fees (36%) and then finding a new property to live in (22%).

In sixth place was dealing with the buyer (14%) and at seven was picking the wrong estate agent (12%). Ten per cent of respondents chose getting a mortgage as their biggest feat, and four per cent said it was the fear that the next property would drop in value.

Expert advice

This survey demonstrates some of the reasons why some people can rightly stress about moving home. To help allay some fears, The Daily Mail published some tips on how to reduce stress while moving.

Their advice includes to make a checklist, organise your removals, to declutter, as well as working out costs and writing a timeline. Reporter Myra Butterworth advises about booking removals: “It may be tempting to not see these as a priority and leave them to the last minute but make sure you book your removals early. It is worth getting several quotes before making a final decision and always ensure your possessions are insured while in transit.”

This is excellent advice and we totally agree! Particularly if you’re moving in a popular time such as school breaks or a bank holiday, you should book your removal as early as possible to ensure you can get the dates you require. Always shop around to find the removals company that is right for you – this includes services offered and vehicles and equipment used. If you are moving valuable or unusual items you’ll need to ensure your chosen firm has the skills and expertise to pack, handle and insure your property correctly. Have a look at our home removals section for more information on our services and experience.

If you’re looking for a checklist, we’ve put one together to help you tick off all the changes of address you’ll need to make after you move. We also have a handy decluttering leaflet with advice and tips to help you make a clean sweep before you sell your home.
