How to move house without harming the environment

19 May 2017 How to move house without harming the environment

Reducing your carbon footprint and the impact your life has on the environment can be a challenge at the best of times.

But what if you’re getting ready to move house? Moving from one property to another can be very stressful so it is easy to put being environmentally friendly on the back burner.

Here are our tips on making your house move as green as possible without causing yourself any extra worry or hassle:

1.      Donate, resell or recycle

One of the first tasks people undertake when they are preparing to move house is to declutter and get rid of all the stuff they no longer need. But instead of reaching for the bin bags and taking it all to the tip, try to only throw out things which are broken or couldn’t be used again by anyone else. Think about selling some of your unwanted items at a car boot sale or through an online marketplace or giving them away on local selling boards or Freecycle. You can also donate items to your local charity shop to help raise money for a good cause. Look at what items and materials can be recycled and take them to the right area of a recycling centre to minimise how much ends up going to landfill.

2.      Think about packaging

Using lots of brand new cardboard boxes to move house can produce a lot of waste. Ask around your friends to see if they have any boxes they are throwing away which you can use instead. Some shops and supermarkets will happily give you some boxes or cardboard crates if you ask. Another option is to consider hiring or borrowing plastic crates which can be given back after you have moved. Instead of using lots of tissue paper or bubble wrap to protect delicate items, wrap breakables in clothes, towels, bedding and cloths which you would be packing anyway. Once your house move is complete, find another use for your cardboard boxes or donate them to someone else. If you can’t find a good home for them, then make sure you recycle the cardboard instead of throwing it away.

3.      Use a removals firm

Trying to move everything yourself is likely to result in lots of trips and a large amount of petrol. Using a professional home removals company like Andrew Porter Limited will mean all your belongings are moved in one journey, reducing your carbon footprint. It is also much more efficient and will save you time and effort. Find out more or get a quotation for your move by calling 0800 389 1222.
