Getting your kids ready for the big move

_{Let’s face it – anyone who has ever moved home will tell you how stressful the whole thing can be. Yet once you’ve made that big commitment it’s important to, quite literally, get your house in order.}

_{Organisation is the key, and no matter much planning and prep you put in, when the big day comes around it’s usually the little things that can trip you up. And when we say ‘little things’, young children are no exception!} 

_{Here are a few tips and tricks to get in front and take some of the stress out of moving day.}

_{Pre-move packing}

_{It always helps to pack the kids’ things first because it frees up your time to concentrate on other last-minute logistics. You can talk about what toys and clothes they have grown out of and may longer need, and which items can go into storage so they can be collected on the day of the move or shortly afterwards. Using storage is also a particularly useful way of winning the argument of whether they do or don’t use a particular toy, because you’ll be placing the non-essential items into storage and they can have it back later.}

_{Make a game of it!}

_{What better than a bit of sibling rivalry to not only pass the time and make the jobs go quicker? Challenge your children to pack their rooms up before one another, with a prize for the winner (and a consolation prize for the not-so-quick runners up!)}

_{Colour it in}

_{Simple but effective: Encourage the kids to colour in the side of the packing boxes. It will pass the time, keep them amused, and will really help when you need to know which box to move into which room in your new house.}

_{Even better – for those of you who have promised to decorate your little ones’ bedrooms in their new homes, get them to draw their ideal bedrooms on the side of their boxes. A working rocket ship or princess castle might not be practical, but at least it can act as a guide when talking through the colour schemes they want.}
