Managing Move Day Stress - Our Top Tips

31 Oct 2017 Managing Move Day Stress - Our Top Tips

If you asked 100 people in the street to name their most stressful experiences, we’re willing to bet that many will say: ‘moving house’.

At Andrew Porter Ltd we have more than 40 years’ experience in house removals, and in that time there’s little that we haven’t seen or done, so we aim to take as much stress out of your move as possible.

There are also plenty of things you can do to help yourself manage the anxieties and pressures that come with your house move, which we’d like to share with you to mark Stress Awareness Day (1st November).

Proper planning

Being organised and prepared is half the battle. Create a plan so you know what you’re doing and when you’re doing it. That way, when you feel it’s all getting a little overwhelming you can refer back to your plan to get back on track.

Hire a reputable conveyancing solicitor, and budget for your outgoings so you know you can cover all the costs.

Take your time, and take time off

Don’t try to do it all on an evening and at the weekend. If you can take time off work to manage your move, do it. There is a double benefit to this - along with sorting your big move you should also hopefully have some spare time to relax too, so you’re not going back to work more stressed than when you left!

Taking time out is also important – if you let your life revolve around moving house, the pressure will only pile on. Remember to take time out for you.

The kids are alright

If you’ve got children, it’s not just the big move you will worry about. Taking care of them and their anxieties will make the big day much easier. Check out our blog on how to get your children ready for moving day.

Make sure you have a document box

We all have essential documents, so by making sure they are all safely stowed away in a dedicated storage box – which you can keep with you – there is far less chance of any of them going astray.

Create a survival pack

Remember to pack the essentials so they can be easily found on the day. Bottles of water, phone chargers, toilet rolls, food and snacks are all going to be required, and if you (or your children) can’t find them, it creates another distraction preventing a smooth move.

Visit your new area

Before the day of the move, visit your new area. Along with helping you feel more familiar with your new surroundings, you will also know where the local shops are in case you forget to pack any essentials in your survival pack!

Be flexible

No matter how much planning and preparation you do, things can (and probably will) go wrong. It’s important to be flexible and take things in your stride, but a back-up plan always helps.

Accentuate the positive

Take the time to remember why you’re making the move – a bigger home, a better location, or the many other reasons why you and your family would go through such pressure.

Hire the professionals

Don’t just take our word for it - many people will tell you that hiring a professional removal company is one of the best ways to take the stress out of moving home.
