Five Reasons to Move to Australia

26 Jan 2018 Five Reasons to Move to Australia

January 26 is Australia Day, and 2018 marks the 230th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and the raising of the flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove.

It seems our British love affair with Australia shows no sign of slowing down, with the number of Brits emigrating to the ‘Land of Aus’ pushing 1.5 million.

But what makes Australia so special? At Andrew Porter Limited we thought we’d use Australia Day to highlight five reasons why so many of us are making the move Down Under.

Weather, climate and nature

Hardly a tough sell for many of us. Australian Christmases are often spent in the sunshine, so unless you’re longing for a white Christmas (which rarely ever comes) maybe it’s best to swap the tinsel and turkey for a barbeque on the beach!

Seriously though, Australia offers a temperature climate with mild winters and warm-to-hot summers, so it’s a sun-worshipper’s dream. And if you really are looking for snow, you could always try Victoria and New South Wales in the high country during winter.

What’s more, Australia has some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, rainforests, deserts and snowy mountains, 500 national parks, and one of the lowest air pollution levels.

Great place to work and study

There are plenty of great opportunities for skilled workers – particularly builders, architects, engineers, medical staff, and lawyers - but it’s a good idea to check with the Australian government if you would be eligible to emigrate and if you would be given priority.

Australia’s economy is also strong, thanks in part of its close proximity to Asia.

If you’re over the age of 55, you could opt for a retirement visa providing you have a significant amount of savings and can support yourself financially.

Then again, maybe you’ll choose to go down the study path. Australia offers the third highest number of international student places in the world, with 1,200 institutions offering 22,000 courses to choose from.

Quality of life

When it comes to quality of life, there are few places better than Australia.

Along with being genuinely one of the friendliest places in the world to live, Australia enjoys a comparatively low crime rate, the lowest population density of any continent in the world, and one of the most efficient healthcare systems in the world too.

And with thousands of kilometres of coastline, vibrant cities and the glorious great outdoors within easy reach of each other, there is something for everyone to enjoy and feel truly at home.

Embracing multi-cultural diversity

If you emigrate to Australia, there’s no need to feel as if you’re an ‘outsider’.

Alongside the comfort of sharing the same language, around 43% of Australians were either born overseas of have a parent who was born overseas, and each year they celebrate their diversity on Harmony Day (21 March).

There are also plenty of ex-pat communities to be found if you’re looking for support or advice from someone who’s made the same journey you’re making.

Sporting life

The less said about this year’s Ashes series the better… but if you’re into your sport there’s arguably no better place to live than Australia.

Whether it’s competing or spectating, the Aussies are well-known for their richly competitive nature which makes them one of the world’s leading sporting nations.

Australian are up there with the best at everything from cricket, rugby (league, union and not forgetting Aussie Rules!), netball, and cricket, to name but a few. So if you want to get involved, there are plenty of places to do so. And if you want to just sit back and watch, you’ll be entertained to the highest standard. In Australia sport is a way of life, so if this sounds like your cup of tea you’ll be in good company.

But don’t forget watersports – whether you’re a beginner or an expert, could there be a better place to enjoy sailing, surfing or windsurfing along the Gold Coast?
