5 reasons why we love having a base in Kendal

14 Apr 2021 5 reasons why we love having a base in Kendal

At the edge of the Lake District National Park, Kendal is a great place to live and work.

Andrew Porter Limited has had a purpose-built self-storage facility at Kendal Business Park since December 2018. When Self Store first opened, it had just 27 indoor and outdoor storage units, but it has been so popular with customers that it has rapidly expanded to cope with rising demand.

With a total of 138 units, the site is about to increase its capacity yet again with the addition of at least 20 new outdoor units with drive-up access.

To celebrate our success in Kendal and mark Discover National Parks Fortnight, which runs until April 18, we’re taking a look at all the reasons we love being based in the town.

  1. Beautiful landscapes on our doorstep

Kendal’s position as the gateway to the Lake District means that we are only ever minutes away from the great outdoors with spectacular scenery and stunning views. Our staff and customers can benefit from having beautiful outdoor spaces to explore and get active in. The town itself is just eight miles away from Windermere, the largest natural lake in England and one of the Lake District’s most popular visitor destinations. It is also less than 20 miles from Grasmere - a picturesque village best known for being the home of poet William Wordsworth.

  1. Excellent transport links

Kendal is in a convenient location with excellent transport links, making it easy for our customers to travel from miles around to use our self storage facilities. Close to the M6, it is convenient to travel to from other parts of the north west, including Manchester and Liverpool as well as Carlisle and Scotland. The town also has good rail links with its own train station.

  1. A rich history

Kendal has an impressive heritage and was settled by the Romans in the first century when they built a fort on the banks of the River Kent. A settlement grew in the area and continued to thrive even when the Roman Empire collapsed, and the Romans left Britain. The 12th Century saw the start of an important new chapter for Kendal when it was given the right to hold a weekly market in 1189 by King Richard I. The monarch was paid a considerable amount of money by the Baron of Kendal for granting this perk and the payment was used to help fund his crusade to the Holy Land. Kendal is home to two castles – Castle Howe and Kendal Castle. The town was also an important centre of the medieval wool trade for around 400 years. Kendal Museum is one of the UK’s oldest museums – it was founded in 1796 - and houses Europe’s biggest taxidermy collection.

  1. Vibrant culture

Kendal has an inspiring arts scene with an active community of artists and craftsmen. The Brewery Arts Centre is a world-class venue which has hosted everything from exhibitions and films to live performances and workshops. The town is also home to a number of galleries and a creative hub known as The Factory. The Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry tells the story of the area’s arts and crafts movement and has its own Victorian street scene. The Quaker Tapestry Museum allows you to discover 350 years of social history told through a tapestry which took more than 4,000 people 15 years to create.

  1. Amazing food and drink

Kendal is home to a whole host of amazing restaurants, pubs, cafes, and local producers including artisan bakeries and micro-breweries. One of the town’s most famous exports is Kendal Mint Cake – a traditional sweet treat which has little to do with cake itself but is extremely popular with walkers and was eaten by Sir Edmund Hillary and his team during their expedition to become the first to conquer Everest in 1953. A solid bar of strong peppermint, Kendal Mint Cake is sometimes covered with chocolate and is still produced in the town by two traditional manufacturers – Romney’s and Quiggin’s. Kendal is also the base for Britain’s only infant formula producer – Kendamil, which creates palm oil-free baby formula using full cream milk from local farms.
